Program Notes
The title “Evergreen” was supplied by the original performer (Esther Choi) on a whim, well before I had written a single note. It conjured an image of timelessness which inspired the opening, main flute melody. The work also contains a multitude of other themes, which act as leitmotifs or thematic ‘characters’, including a Threat motif which gains prominence as the piece unfolds. These themes are woven together in a complex structure that attempts to articulate a journey from start to finish as organically as possible.
